Breastfeeding may not always be an option for those with babies who have food allergies. This calls for a special kind of infant formula.

The incidences of food allergies seem to be on the rise in infants today. Having an infant diagnosed with a dairy allergy is a daunting thing, leaving many parents with limited options. For those who cannot breastfeed due to time constraints like working outside the home or lack of adequate breast milk production, formula is the only way to feed an infant.

There are many baby formulas on the market that provide the required nutrients for babies. But when dealing with dairy allergies, milk-based formulas are out of the question. However, there are bottle feeding formula alternatives that are safe for babies with food allergies. These are usually pricey but some insurance companies will pay for them. There are also state-funded programs like WIC that will provide these lactose free baby formulas.

The following three formulas on the market cater specifically to babies with dairy allergies.

Neocate

Neocate is an amino-based baby formula that does not contain any milk protein. Manufacturing is done in a milk-free facility. It is also gluten-free and has no soy protein. Neocate is an expensive option but is very beneficial even to children with multiple allergies as it contains all the essential nutrients without the risk of allergens. Parents of babies with milk allergy usually need a doctor's prescription to obtain Neocate and it is covered by many insurance plans under nutritional products.

Elecare

Elecare is an infant formula that is geared towards older babies. Parents can get the flavored or vanilla flavored variety. Like most specialty infant formulas, this is not a cheap option but it is has all the needed nutrition and is made of free amino acids. It is a good choice for older infants who benefit from it more than they would from non-dairy options like rice, soy, or almond milk. Elecare is not found in stores. To buy elecare, parents have to order directly from the company.

Nutramigen

Nutramigen is a baby formula made by Enfamil that is amino acid-based. It has a slightly bitter taste and strong smell. However, milk allergy infants who are started on it early often do not mind the taste and thrive well on this formula. Compared to Neocate and Elecare, it is a more affordable option and can be purchased in regular grocery stores as well as pharmacies.

Tips When Buying Dairy-Free Baby Formulas

When making a decision on which hypoallergenic infant formula to use, parents should be mindful of the baby's food allergies. Compare baby formula based on the nutritional benefits of the formula, and what is affordable. Neocate, Elecare and Nutramigen are three brands that have been found to be effective alternatives for babies with food allergies.
